Transmission Slipping — Signs and Next Steps
A slipping transmission revs without accelerating, shifts harshly, or shudders. Almost always either low/burnt fluid or worn internal clutches.
What's happening
An automatic transmission slips when its clutches can't hold the gear under load. The engine revs without commensurate acceleration, or shifts feel like clunks. The most common preventable cause is low or burnt fluid; the most common terminal cause is worn clutches from years of use.
You might also notice
- RPM jumps when accelerating without gaining speed
- Shudder during light cruise (TCC clutch wear)
- Burnt smell from the transmission fluid
- Brown or black fluid (should be pink/red)
- Delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Drive
Likely causes (most common first)
- Low transmission fluid (often a leak somewhere)
- Burnt/contaminated fluid (overdue change)
- Worn clutch packs
- Failed shift solenoid
- Worn torque converter
- Failed valve body
What to check first
- Check transmission fluid level and color
- Pink/red = OK, brown = neglected, black + burnt smell = damaged
- Read codes — P0700 will appear, but you need a transmission-capable scanner for the sub-codes
- A fluid-and-filter service may help if caught early
Common OBD2 codes for this symptom
Don't have the code yet? Look up your code or read it with AXLY.pro.
Can I keep driving?
Drive as little as possible until diagnosed. A slipping transmission gets exponentially more expensive the longer you wait.
Confirm with the actual code
Symptom-based diagnosis narrows the field — reading the actual stored code finishes the job. AXLY.pro is a free iPhone app that pairs with any Bluetooth OBD2 adapter and reads every stored DTC.
