Car Won't Start, No Click — Causes and Next Steps
Total silence when you turn the key points at a dead battery, dead ignition switch, broken neutral safety switch, or a security/immobilizer fault.
What's happening
If the dashboard lights up but turning the key produces nothing — no click, no crank — the high-current path to the starter isn't being commanded. Usually it's the low-current control side: ignition switch, neutral safety switch (auto trans must be in P or N), clutch safety switch (manual), or the immobilizer rejecting your key.
You might also notice
- Dashboard lights normal
- Sometimes works after wiggling the shifter
- Security indicator blinking
- Sometimes works on the second or third try
Likely causes (most common first)
- Completely dead battery (try jumping)
- Failed neutral safety / range sensor — try Neutral instead of Park
- Failed clutch safety switch (manual transmission)
- Immobilizer fault (usually a low key fob battery or worn ignition switch)
- Failed ignition switch
- Blown starter relay
What to check first
- Try shifting to Neutral, then crank — if it starts, you found a range sensor or shifter cable issue
- Manual: press the clutch all the way to the floor; some cars have a strict cutoff switch
- Replace the key fob's coin battery if the dash 'no key detected' light appears
- Listen for the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to RUN — if you hear it, the immobilizer is happy and the issue is the starter circuit
