P0088

Fuel Rail/System Pressure — Too High

Severity: high DIY difficulty: 4/5 Typical cost: $150–$1000

What P0088 means

P0088 is the opposite of P0087: the fuel pressure sensor reports more pressure than commanded. Too much pressure over-fuels the engine and stresses injectors, lines, and seals. It is most common on high-pressure direct-injection and diesel systems.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough running or hard starting
  • Black smoke from the exhaust (diesel) or fuel smell
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Possible limp mode

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Faulty or stuck fuel pressure regulator / control valve
  2. Restricted or blocked fuel return line
  3. Faulty fuel pressure sensor reading high
  4. ECM commanding excessive pressure due to a related fault
  5. Failing high-pressure fuel pump internals

Can I keep driving?

Drive only as far as needed to get it looked at. Over-pressure can wash cylinders with fuel and damage injectors or the catalytic converter.

Typical repair cost

DIY fixes can start near $150 (parts only). Shop repairs for P0088 typically run up to $1000 depending on the underlying cause and vehicle. Start with the most common cause — Faulty or stuck fuel pressure regulator / control valve — before throwing parts at it.
